Summer break
Don't forget that next Tuesday (8th) will be the last training night before the summer break, classes resume on August 19th.
The Good Citizen test night is almost upon us (15th) - hope you're all practising hard and remember your poop scoops, brushes and identity tags on the night.

Match results
The match at Spynie on Monday night was well attended and club members did very well, although I think that some of them are members of both Spey Valley and BMNCC so both clubs did well!
Congratulations to Daveena whose Inka was declared Best in Match and also to Heather whose Fraya was Reserve Best in Match. Jodi Buchanan of BMNCC took the Best Puppy award with Molly.
June's Benson was Best Baby Puppy and Ria's Jasper was Best of the Rest - first time out for both of them.

Chin up at Dundee
The weather was just perfect for Dundee Canine Club's open show at Camperdown Park last Saturday, sunny and warm with just enough breeze to keep dogs comfortable. It's a great place for a show but whether or not it rains makes a huge difference when you are parked on a large hill!
On my way down to Dundee I realised that I had forgotten my camera and jokingly said that it would be a day when a club member would go Best In Show and I wouldn't be able to record it.....how right I was! A big well done to Gill Swanston whose Japanese Chin puppy, Chico, won the toy group, toy puppy group then went on to win BIS as well as Best Puppy! What a great day for you!! (Photos to follow).
There are a few other wins to note.
Moira's Dandy won the toy minor puppy class - this was his first ever show and Moira's face was a picture!
Lynne's Pomona and Luigi won their breed classes with Luigi taking Best of Breed.
Karen's Molly won her class and Best of Breed.
Donna's River won his puppy class.
Nicky's Gabbi won the hound puppy class.
Marianne's Glenn won his junior class (I think!).
Sue's Rosa came 2nd, to the big winning Japanese chin, in a good sized toy puppy class - stiff competition there!
Stakes classes are scheduled at Dundee and, unusually, they are held before BIS. This can mean classes clash and you have to keep an eye on a few rings at a time. Prize money is on offer though and it can be worth trying to recoup a bit of that petrol money. Sue's Jana was whisked from minor puppy stakes (3rd and £3.50) to the puppy stakes under a different judge (2nd and £5) and then just caught the end of the gundog minor puppy bitch class, with yet another judge, where she got a 3rd out of a large entry. A bit of rushing about but she took it all in her stride. £8.50 is a drop in the ocean when you consider fuel costs these days but it's better than nothing!

Banff, Moray & Nairn CC match
If you are intending to go to the match at Spynie Hall on Monday (and we hope you are), please note that the road leading to the hall from the A96 will be closed but you will have access from the Elgin to Duffus road.

Wins for Wallace and Riley
Here are a few belated results for Jennifer's Riley and Wallace from two shows earlier in the month.
At Livingston Open show Wallace was BOB and at St Andrews, Cupar and District Open he won his Graduate class and Riley was 1st in the AV Sporting stakes class.

Blackpool takes a battering
Blackpool champ show has been hit by winds and bad weather in previous years but this year conditions were so bad that the show had to be abandoned part way through the third day. The catering tent completely collapsed, trapping a large number of people within, and part of the main ring marquee fell inwards.
Exhibitors were instructed to leave the showground immediately and, although there were a number of injuries, nobody was seriously hurt. It must have been pretty scary for everyone there.

Border Union
Sorry for the delay with these results but my computer seems to be sickening for something!
Border Union Championship show was held last weekend in Kelso and enjoyed much better weather than last year, no muddy walkways and the sun even shone. The wind was a little chilly but we weren't complaining.
There weren't a great many club members at the show but those that went generally did well.
Linda and Vic's Gino won his graduate class and Joanne's Walter won quite a large post grad class. There were a few qualifying positions - Katrina's Leo was 2nd in puppy dog, Donna's River was 1st in his puppy dog class and Elizabeth's Bronni was 3rd in open bitch.
Sue's Rosa won her puppy class then went on to take the RBCC and Best Puppy in Breed. This at the age of 11 months - let's hope it's not just a flash in the pan!
Congratulations and well done to everyone. Let me know if I've missed anyone.

Two papillon exhibitors have perhaps set a trend by becoming the first couple to get married at a dog show. They tied the knot in the Border Union best in show ring after the group judging had finished and this was followed by a disco and buffet on the grounds.

Leila turns a corner
Linda and Ron have asked me to pass on their thanks in the following message:
''Ron and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the 'hands-on' trainers and the members of Spey Valley for the patience and encouragement they have given us in trying to persuade Leila to behave herself and not scream at the judges as the fancy takes her.
We might (fingers and everything else crossed) now have turned the corner as, at SKC she got 3rd in Post Grad Bitch and actually stood on the table without uttering a sound and wagged her tail at the judge. She was again a good girl at Banff, Moray and Nairn when she allowed the appointed judge to go over her without 'speaking' to him!
I am attaching a picture of Leila as she was a year ago and am hoping that she will revert to her 'arrogant' self, as portrayed, in the not too distant future.
Once again, many, many thanks to all concerned''.

Junior Handling Seminar - a report by Caitlin Forbes
The first ever Junior Handling Seminar in Scotland was held on Sunday 1st June. Ria, Jodie (from Banff, Moray & Nairn club) Glenn and myself were lucky enough to go. Karen and Jenny were good enough to take us down to Carnoustie, Fife.
The first part of the programme was the conformation of the dog. Do you know where the pin bones are? Can you find them on your dog?
Then we were put into groups of experience, in my group there were seven of us. We were instructed by Michelle McAngus. We had to do triangles, Ls, circles, shadowing, show dentition and bite.
In the second group both Glenn and Ria were given the confidence to take part in JH by Cath Mason. Jasper did not make life easy for Ria but, with perseverence, they enjoyed the experience! Glenn got to handle my Tilly and Davy the papillon. Tilly was so good she was used by two other Juniors. We then stopped for lunch before more practice and then the competition!!
I was 4th in the 12 -16 age group and Ria was 4th in the 6 - 11 age group.

Banff, Moray and Nairn CC Open show
Banff, Moray & Nairn CC held their first open show of the year at Lossiemouth community centre on Saturday 31st May. The hall was very busy with people and dogs and it became quite warm at times. It's a pity it couldn't have been an outdoor show as the weather was glorious.
June had two judging appointments at this show, as well as tackling the working group she also did a great job of the junior handling classes.
It was a good day for quite a few members of the club, many taking top honours and going home with some very impressive rosettes.
Heather's Sasha won her whippet class but was beaten for BOB by Liz's Erin who then went on to win the hound group and then Reserve Best in Show - well done!
Still with hounds, Bob's Luka was BOB and G2 and Erica and Dougie's Charlotte won her class but was beaten for BOB by Nicky's Alfie who then took G4.
Elizabeth's Bronni was BOB and G2. Also in gundogs, Marianne's Glenn won his NSC class and Jennifer's Riley was BOB.
In terriers Jock's Dram was BOB and G1, Sarah's Sasha was BOB and also placed in the group but I'm not sure of the place at the moment, will add it later. Daveena's Rowan was Best Terrier Puppy.
Linda's Mollie was Best AVNSC toy and G1, Sue's Rosa was BOB, G2 and Best Toy Puppy.
Morag's Arran was BOB and 4th in the pastoral group and Linda and Vic's Buddy was BOB.
In the working group Joanne's Annie was BOB and G3, Donna's River was Best Working Puppy and went on to Reserve Best Puppy in Show!
Caitlin won her junior handling class and then overall Best Junior Handler.

English Setter Society of Scotland
Belated results for Jennifer's Wallace. At the English Setter Society of Scotland's open show at Alva on 23rd March Wallace was 1st in puppy dog, 1st in maiden dog and went on to take Best Opposite Sex Puppy in Show.

Scottish Border Collie Club
Katrina's pups continue to make their mark with wins at the Scottish Border Collie Club's open show at Alva on Sunday.
Phoebe was 2nd in Minor Puppy Bitch and 1st in Debutant Bitch. Leo had a fantastic day, winning Minor Puppy Dog, Debutant Dog, Novice Dog and topping it off with Best Puppy in Show.
A great start Katrina, you must be very proud. Keep it up!

North of Scotland Toydog
The North of Scotland Toydog Club committee encountered a slight hiccup to the start of their show on Sunday at the Community centre in Arbroath. Normally they are in very early, all set up and with the smell of cooking bacon in the air, all ready to welcome in the exhibitors. A missing hall keeper meant that a long queue developed on the pavement outside (luckily the weather was lovely) and entry wasn't possible until almost 10am with judging due to start at 10.30am! All credit to them though as they managed to get up and running with only half an hours delay.
Sue's Rosa and Desmond had to settle for 2nd places this week but Pansy won her Limit class and then took Best Bitch.

Carluke and District Open
Nicky was the only club member I know of who went down to Lanark Racecourse for Carluke and District Open show on Saturday. It was to be Alfie's day as he won his class, then took Best of Breed and also Group 3!

Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show
Unusually for Ingliston, the sun was shining and there was hardly a breath of wind for Friday (16th), the first day of the show, but it was all change for Saturday, being typically damp and cold. I'm not sure how the Sunday was but it just goes to show that you have to be prepared for all weathers at our outdoor shows.
There were quite a few good wins as well as some Crufts qualifying places for Spey Valley members.
Karen's Ceilidh won her class and went on to take the bitch CC - just one more to go!
Katrina's two pups started their show careers in style - Phoebe was 3rd in Minor Puppy Bitch and Leo did extremely well by winning Minor Puppy Dog, Best Dog Puppy and then Best Puppy!

Scottish Junior Handler of the Year
Caitlin went down to Ingliston on the first day of SKC to take part in the finals of the Scottish Junior Handler of the Year competition. Handling Kia, she did a great job and took the winning spot!
