New Year and time to catch up

Happy New Year to everyone! It's nearly time for classes to start and about time this blog had an update! So here's a catch up with some of last year's happenings.

First of all, our Companion show in September. We were very lucky with the weather, it was a beautiful day, which helped bring everyone out and led to a record amount of money raised for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who helped make the day such a success and particularly to our judges who had a very busy day in the sunshine.

Best In Show went to Morag's Logie and Reserve Best In Show to Heather's Tilly who was also Best Puppy In Show. Glenn was Best Junior Handler.

Kilmarnock Open obedience show was held on the same day as our show. Big congratulations to Fran who won the Novice class with Diva, a real achievement as it's very competitive at that level.

We held an obedience match in October, thanks to Judith Owens for judging and to everyone who competed, especially all those who came over from Aberdeen.

Judith set out interesting rounds to make things a little different and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Thankfully we didn't have a repeat of last year's snow and our Christmas party went ahead as planned.

This year the club made donations of £250 each to DAWGS and Mrs Murray's Home for Stray Dogs and Cats as well as the £600 raised from our show for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Ian Finney came on behalf of Hearing Dogs to collect the cheque and brought his lovely working dog, Cinders.

A donation was also made to Ellie Broadley from Keith whose family have been fund-raising in order to buy her an electric wheelchair. We were very pleased that Ellie was able to come for the presentation.

A test night was held on December 13th for Bronze, Silver and Gold. Congratulations to all who passed and especially to Joy and Alfie whose perseverence finally paid off. Looking forward to seeing you get your Silver!

Ailsa had a great night with her Bostons, Chatter and Tara both passed their Bronze and Silver and Mookie passed her Gold. I wonder how many other Bostons have achieved this?

Congratulations to Margaret and Ellie who have been selected to be part of the team representing Scotland at the Inter-regional Obedience at Crufts! It's no mean feat and, as far as I am aware, Margaret is the first club member ever to achieve this. Good luck, enjoy your time at Crufts and we'll all be rooting for you.

There were successes in the show ring for many club members last year, I think both June's Benson and Elaine's Zeta added to their collection of CCs. Sue's Elwood gained his JW and also took the RCC at the Papillon Club of Scotland's champ show in May, Rosa took RCC at SKC in August.

At Midland Counties Fran's Henley won the AV gundog puppy dog Dog World/Purina Pro Plan pup of the year stakes.

At Gundog Breeds Association of Scotland champ show in October Katie handled Shaun's Dolce to win the puppy bitch stakes class, Katie also had success with Lara who won PG bitch stakes class. Heather's Tilly won the junior stakes class.

Straight after Gundog Breeds was Banff, Moray and Nairn Limited show, Katie left her girls at home for a rest and let Chewie do the winning instead. He took BOB, G1 and then RBIS!

If anyone knows of any other notable wins, please let me know.

Coming right up to date with Boston this weekend, Fran's Henley won both his minor puppy and puppy classes and went on to take the RCC and Best Pup in Breed. Congratulations! What a great result for a youngster. His sister, Shaun's Dolce, did almost as well when she came 2nd in both of her classes.

Classes start again tonight, looking forward to seeing everybody.

This blog has been a bit behind with news so here's a catch up of some events over the past few months.

At Crufts in March both Elaine and June were to be seen on the famous green carpet of the main arena. June's Benson had won through to the final of the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant winners of the year and Elaine's Zeta was present in the working group after she'd won Best of Breed.

Companion show at Kintore

Here are a few more details on the Companion show at Farthing Croft, Clovenstone, Kintore on Sunday. Held in aid of Halfpenny Farm Animal Sanctuary.

The judge is Mrs Mickey Ramsay (Drumview), entries will be taken from 12 noon with judging starting at 1pm. £2 for first class and 50p subsequent classes.

Classes are - AV puppy, AV sporting, AV non-sporting, AV open, AV veteran, AV crossbreed or rescue, handsome dog, prettiest bitch, dog in best condition, dog the judge would most like to take home.

To reach the venue from the north, leave the A96 at the first slip road to Kintore, go under the bypass and head back towards Inverurie. Turn left at the sign for Clovenstone and it is approx 1-2 miles up the road. There should be signs for the dog show.

Fochabers Gala, 24th July, at the playing fields in Fochabers. Entries will be taken from 12.30pm with judging starting at 1.45pm. Sorry, no further details.

Farming Croft, Kintore, 21st August. Entries from 12noon, judging at 1pm.

4th September, Roseisle Village Hall, nr Elgin. Our own annual show held in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Entries from 11am, judging at noon. Further details will follow.

Sorry for the short notice but our end of session match has been rearranged for 12th July. This means that the last training night will now be the 28th June. The Good Citizen test night will go ahead on the 5th July, as planned.

It's almost time for the summer holidays and to end the session we will be holding a show match for club members on 28th June. It will start at 7pm and the judge will be Helen Paterson.

The following week, 5th July, we will be holding Bronze, Silver and Gold Good Citizen tests. 7pm start, don't forget your name tags, brushes and poop scoops.

Classes will start again on August 28th.

Companion show at Roseisle

We will be holding a Companion Show in aid of Willows Animal Sanctuary at Roseisle Hall on Sunday 15th May.

Entries will be taken from 11am and judging will start at midday. There will be pedigree, novelty and obedience classes with judging taking place in three rings. Linda Offen will judge the pedigree, Gladys McCulloch the novelty and Ian Dormund the obedience.

Refreshments will be available, with the usual pies, rolls and baking.

Extra Bronze test

Since there are quite a few dogs in the first class who are ready for their Bronze, a test has been organised for next Tuesday. It will start at 8pm as usual and because it will take a little longer than a normal class, the top class will be cancelled for that night.

Don't forget your poop scoop, brush and that all important id tag showing your name and address.

Companion Show at Insch

Donside Ringcraft Club will be holding a Companion show in aid of the Archie Foundation at Bennachie Leisure Centre, Insch, on Sunday, April 24th.

Entries will be taken from 10am with judging starting at 11am. There will be ten pedigree classes. five novelty, including junior handling, and the judge is Mr Bill Goudie.

Rosettes awarded for 1st - 4th in all classes. First entry £2.50, subsequent classes with the same dog 50p.

We have decided to hold a couple of extra classes at our match on Saturday. Apart from the usual puppy, veteran, main match and junior handling, there will also be a class for 4 - 6 month old pups and one for 12 - 18 months.

This Tuesday our AGM will be held in the hall at 9pm, all paid up members are welcome to attend. There will be no top class that night but all other classes are as normal.

Happy New Year to everyone! Here's hoping it's a successful one for you all.

Classes start again this Tuesday and the times have changed to our winter timetable. Ringcraft is 6.45 - 7.30pm, Puppy class 7.30 - 8pm, Bronze Good Citizen 8 - 8.45pm, Silver and Gold GC 8.45 - 9.30pm. Hopefully we will not have a repeat of the snow but, if it looks as if the weather may affect classes, you can check before leaving home. Notice will be posted here or you can phone 01466 730292/01343 870281.

Annual membership is now due, £3 single and £5 joint.

A show match will be held on February 26th at the hall and we have invited Banff, Moray & Nairn CC and Donside Ringcraft Club. Come along, support the club and get some practice in before Crufts! Our judge will be Ian Forbes. Start time to follow.

Thanks to a short-lived gap in the wintry weather, the Good Citizen tests were able to go ahead last week. Everybody must have been training hard because the pass rate was very impressive. Well done to all those who passed. To those who so narrowly missed out, keep practising, you're sure to make it next time.

Due to the continuing snow and bad state of many roads, including those around the hall, tomorrow's Christmas party has been cancelled.

Hopefully there will be some improvement before next week's test night. We'll keep you posted.

Regrettably, due to the bad weather, classes have been cancelled for this week.

Next week, weather permitting, we will be holding our Christmas party. Everyone is welcome, there will be party games, food and a fancy dress competition.

The following week, 14th, will be the Good Citizen test night. Don't forget your brush, poop scoops and make sure your dog is wearing an identity disc showing your name and address.

Classes will resume on January 25th.

Arbroath Community Hall was the venue for this show on November 20th - before the Big Snow caused havoc with many peoples' travel plans.

Linda and Ron's Hugo had a very good day when he went BOB and also Group 2.

Catrine CC and LKA of Scotland

Catrine Canine Club Open show was held at Lanark on Saturday 20 November. The Agricultural Centre is a good venue with heaps of parking but space was scarce beside the three rings in the hall. At least all the bodies made the temperature rise as it was a pretty cold day!

Only a few club members made the journey there, Dundee Limited show was on the same day, so not many results. Sue's Elwood won his graduate class and Ria won her JH class, which came with £5 prize money and a selection box - well worth it!

The following day, LKA of Scotland Open show was held in the Central Hall, Ingliston. This venue certainly doesn't lack space but it does lack heating! Space heaters were used but a lot of the heat must have escaped through the gaps in the walls . . . make sure you wear your thermals if you're attending a winter show there!

Again, not many club members present but a few wins to report. Katie's Lara won her post grad class and then went on to take BOB. Sue's Jana also won her class and BOB and Desmond won his graduate class. Erica and Niamh were over at the hound ring, which must have been the coldest part of the hall and whippets certainly needed their jackets! No wins for them but Niamh's Mia did take 3rd in a very large junior class.

Benson competed in the Kennel Gazette's Junior Warrant semi-finals, which were held all the way down in Earl's Court at Discover Dogs, and he was one of ten who made it through to the finals to be held at Crufts in March.

June was unable to handle Benson because she fell and broke her shoulder a couple of weeks before the event but breeder and co-owner Davie stepped in and obviously did a great job.

Huge congratulations June, good luck for the final and we wish you a speedy recovery!

A slightly late result for the North of Scotland Toydog show at Arbroath a couple of weeks ago. Jill's Tiger and Chico both won their respective classes with Tiger taking BOB and also G3.

Cracker is over in Ireland and took his first Green Star and BOB at Cloghran All Breeds Champ show on 13 November.

Our match last Sunday went very well, with good sized classes and some lovely rounds of obedience. Well done to all the winners and, in particular, Loretta deserves a pat on the back for all her hard work with Sasha, resulting in her winning the first class. Sasha has been quite a challenge for Loretta but she has come on in leaps and bounds.

It was a lovely, bright autumn day for BMNCC's open show at Lossiemouth Community Centre on Saturday, one of the last shows of the year for many.

June's Benson had yet another great result at this show, he went Best of Breed, took the Working group and then went on to Best In Show. I think this will be his 13th such award!

Also in a top position, Les and Rita's Magic was Best Toy NSC, Group 1 and then Best Opposite Sex.

Erica and Doug's Noodle also went right to the top with Reserve Best Puppy In Show. Not only that but she won her beagle Junior class and also Best of Breed. She really has got off to a flying start with her first two shows.

KC Good Citizen Scheme course

Lesley, Jenny and Fran went down to Forfar last Saturday for a Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme examiner assessment course.

It was a busy day, with a seminar in the morning followed by two quite involved tests, but all three came away with certificates, which means that they are now approved to act as examiners for the Bronze Good Citizen award.

A few results from some recent shows.

At South Wales Kennel Association Champ show Liz's Bunty was 3rd in her Post Grad Bitch class.

The Gundog Society of Wales Champ show was held on 13th October, Sue's Reeves won his Puppy Dog class and sister Kirby was 3rd in hers.

At Tay Valley Gundog open show, Carnoustie on October 9th, Elizabeth's Asher won his class, Katie's Lara was 1st in Post Grad and Leia 1st in Open, Lara went on to take BOB and was also shortlisted for Best In Show.

On the same day another group open show was held, Scottish Toydog, at Bonnybridge. Sue's Elwood won his Puppy class.

Yet another group open show, this time Scottish Utility Breeds, which was held at Bo'ness on October 16th. Morag's Logie headed a line up of Eurasiers in the Import class and Gigha was placed 4th.

Jill's Chico has returned home from his stay in Ireland. Not only did he become an Irish Champion but he finished off his stay by winning his class and taking Best of Breed at Belfast.

Weimaraner Club of Scotland Open Obedience Show

The Cochrane Hall, Alva, hosts a number of shows and last Sunday it was the turn of the Weimaraner Club of Scotland's Open Obedience show.

The hall sits in a park with the Ochil hills as a stunning backdrop. You'd never guess from the photo above just what a mudbath dogs and handlers had to contend with in the rings! Many dogs found the conditions hard to cope with, especially when it came to having to sit or lie down in puddles!

Jenny's Brint took the wet in his stride and took 2nd place in Beginners, just a quarter of a point behind the winner...so close yet again to winning out of Beginners. Margaret and Ellie were at their first open show and they also coped with all the mud and were placed a worthy 5th in Pre-Beginners. Well done to you both!

Driffield Championship Show 2010

Driffield Champ show was held at Wetherby Racecourse last week, 30 Sept - 3 Oct. Conditions were not great and I think at least three of the four days were hit with rain, certainly Sunday had heavy rain for most of the day, which made for puddles in the rings, despite being in marquees, and plenty of mud everywhere. There were problems leaving the venue with some having to wait over two hours to get out!

Just a few results to report, I don't think many club members were there.

Liz's Poppy was 1st in Post Grad Bitch and sister Bunty was 3rd in Limit Bitch.

Sue's pup (still don't know his name) won his Puppy Dog class and was Best Puppy, Katie's Lara won her Yearling Bitch class.

Katrina's Marty was 2nd in Yearling Dog and Leo was 2nd in Limit Dog.

Strathspey Canine Club held their annual Companion show at Nethybridge on Saturday 25 September.

Heather won the hound/terrier class with Sasha (?), Linda and Ron's Esmee won the toy/utility class and Freda was Best Puppy in Show. Well done!

Belfast Championship Show 2010

There weren't many of us at Belfast the weekend of September 25 - 27, perhaps the thought of having to go 'overseas' (plus the cost!) puts most people off. Classes in general were down in number.

I think the only win to report is Sue's Elwood, who won his Puppy Dog class.

Irish Collie Club

Linda had a back to back showing weekend recently. She travelled over to Ireland for the Irish Collie Club champ show on Saturday 25th September, followed by Belfast on the Sunday.

It was well worth the trip because at the Irish Collie Club's show Gino won the LD class and then took the RCC! Congratulations!

Darlington Championship Show 2010

Darlington Champ show was held at Newby Hall, 17-19 September.

Just a few wins to report, there don't seem to have been that many club members there.

The Kumormai kennel had a very good day, Milo was 1st in JD, Joely 1st in PGB and litter sister Zeta won her OB class then took the CC, Best of Breed and was also short-listed in the group. The week before, Joely proved she could use her brains when she passed her Good Citizen Bronze test at the Mastiff Association's club show. Congratulations Elaine and gang!

Sue also had a day to remember, Kupah won his GD dog class and this gave him the last few points needed for his Junior Warrant. Not only that but her young pup (not sure of his name) was at his first show and he qualified for Crufts with a 2nd in MPD.

More good news from the gundogs, Elizabeth's Asher won his LD class and Bronni was 2nd in OB.

Juniors at Richmond

Caitlin and Glenn both qualified for the Junior Handling semi-finals, which are held at Richmond Champ show, Guildford. This was a first trip down there for both of them and it turned out to be a very successful one for Caitlin when she was placed 4th in her class. Well done to you both on qualifying and congratulations on your place Caitlin!

It was to be a busy weekend for the Forbes family, straight after Richmond they headed back north for the long drive up to Lochaber!

Nethybridge Companion Show

Strathspey Canine Club will be holding a companion show at Nethybridge Public Hall (Near Grantown on Spey) this Saturday (25th) in aid of Grantown Dog Rescue. There will be pedigree, novelty and obedience classes.

Entries will be taken from 12 noon, judging will start at 1pm. Maria Hall will be judging the pedigree and novelty classses, Evril Spencer the obedience.

Lochaber 2010

Lochaber and District Canine Society's Open show was held at Fort William on September 12th. The hospitality at this show is second to none and there are always generous prizes as well as prize money given out. Well done to the committee for organising such a lovely show.

There weren't that many club members at the show but there are a number of wins to report.

Erica and Doug's Twiglet won her class then BOB and G2.

Cathy's Sula took BOB and also G1, Karen's Poppy was BOB and G2 and Caitlin's Solo was also BOB and he took G4.

Linda and Ron's Hugo took BOB and G4.

Jenny's Sadie was BOB and G2, this gave her the last point needed to gain her Show Certificate of Merit, she also won a large AV Open Bitch class and £10 prize money to boot! Fran's Diva (handled by John) took Best Pastoral NSC after winning both of her classes.

Sue's Desmond won his class, Elwood also won his class and was Best Toy Puppy.

Another big day for Benson

At Lothian CA Open show last Saturday, June's Benson went all the way to the top once again with another Best In Show award. Well done!

Benson was also entered in the Scottish heat of the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Competition, which was being held at this show, and he was one of those chosen to go through to the semi-finals at Discover Dogs in November. Good luck for that June, let's hope that Benson will be one of the ten finalists who go on to compete at Crufts 2011.

Roseisle Companion Show

The sun was shining for our Companion show at Roseisle, which no doubt helped bring out all the doggy folk, and a good sum was raised in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Thanks to the three judges for doing a great job, to all who worked hard to make the day a success and to everyone who came along and took part.

Lesley's Rommi was declared Best In Show and Ria's Jasper was Reserve Best In Show.

Companion Show in Elgin

Don't forget the show being held in aid of Moray Friends of Archie this Sunday, 19th, in Moray College car park.

Entries will be taken from 11am with judging starting at 12 noon. Pedigree classes will be judged by Pat Dempster (Benreeda) and Novelty by Linda Younie. £2 first entry and £1 for further classes with the same dog.

There will also be a burger van, face painting and a raffle.

City of Birmingham Champ Show and a new Champion!

The City of Birmingham champ show was held from 3rd-5th September.

It turned out to be a very exciting show for Elizabeth (one which she almost didn't make due to her van breaking down just outside Perth!), Bronni won the Open Bitch class and then went on to take the CC. Since this was her third such award, she is now a Champion. Huge congratulations!

There are a few other wins to report.

June's Benson continues to be in the cards, he won his Limit Dog class and then took the RCC.

Sue's Kupah won both his Junior Dog and Graduate Dog classes. He has been chasing JW points and would have got 3 for his GD win but I'm not sure how many he has under his belt at the moment.

Liz's Bunty and Poppy did very well to get placed in their enormous whippet classes. Bunty was 3rd out of 17 Post Grad bitches and Poppy was 4th in a class of 22 Limit Bitches. (Hope I've got them the right way round!)

Kilmarnock Obedience Show

Colin and Lisa went down to Kilmarnock on Saturday 4th September. Colin's Beauly did a good round but ended up just out of the places in a class of 36 Beginners. Lisa and Max did make it into the line up with their 8th place. Well done!

At this show there is a special charity C class which looks like it would have been great fun. The handlers had to do the round dressed in a clown's outfit, leave their dog in a stay whilst applying face paint and also bounce about on a space hopper! Quite a test for dog and handler.

Scottish Kennel Club Champ Show, Aug 10

The sun was shining at Ingliston on 28th and 29th August but, as is often the way at this venue, a very strong wind was blowing, which made things a little chilly. Just as well those marquees are pretty sturdy as they took quite a battering!

Spey Valley members did well, one coming home with a CC and three with RCCs!

Working - Elaine's Zeta was 1st in her Open Bitch class and added another CC to her collection, June's Benson was 1st in Limit and took the RCC.

Hound - Niamh's Mia was 1st Junior Bitch, Liz's Bunty was 4th in a large Post Grad Bitch class but sister Poppy went even better by taking 2nd in Limit Bitch and then the RCC.

Toy - Elizabeth and George took Best Bitch with one of the Bolognese (Lola?), Jill's Cracker won his Puppy Dog class, Sue's Elwood won his class and Best Puppy Dog, Pansy was 2nd in Open Bitch and also took the RCC.

Utility - The Eurasiers were out in force for the Imported Register classes, Morag's Gigha was 2nd in Post Grad Bitch and Logie won his Open Dog class and then went Best Import.

Pastoral - Linda and Vic's Gino was 3rd in Limit Dog and Candy won her Limit Bitch class. Carol's Chaos won her Puppy Bitch class and her brother was 3rd in Puppy Dog.

Gundog - Fran's Diesel was 1st in Limit Dog, Sue's Irish Setter pup (whose name I don't know!) was 1st in her Puppy Bitch class and Katie's Leia was 2nd in a good sized Limit Bitch class.

Terrier - Daveena's Inka took BOB.

Junior Handling - Caitlin got to grips with an Australian Shepherd Dog and won the YKC handling class.

WKC was held last weekend, many miles away at Builth Wells. For Elaine, the long journey and lack of sleep was all forgotten when Zeta won her class, took the BCC and also Best of Breed. Not only that but Milo was Best Puppy.

A companion show was held at a very windy Lourin Fair last Saturday. Once again a Carvaha beagle took the top spot, hot on the heels of her Keith win, Charlotte collected another Best In Show award.

Reserve Best In Show also went to a Spey Valley member - Niamh's Mia.

More about Kennel Cough

Just to clarify the situation regarding Kennel Cough.

We have not had any coughing dogs at training classes but we would like everyone to be aware of the condition so that we can avoid the chance of spreading it amongst our dogs.

For those who may not know very much about it, Kennel Cough passes from dog to dog much like humans pass on colds and flu. Dogs don't have to have been in kennels to catch it, just having contact with an affected dog. Most healthy dogs that catch it will get over it very quickly and easily but it can be more of a problem in young pups and older dogs with problems.

If your dog does have a cough, get it checked by your vet, avoid other dogs and please don't bring it to classes until it is well again. If it has been in contact with affected dogs then you should also keep it away from classes until you know for sure that it hasn't contracted Kennel Cough.

Jill's Chico went away over to Ireland to take part in the run of Champ shows known as the Irish Circuit. Last week at Killarney he gained the last Green Star that he needed to become an Irish Champion.

Govan Open Obedience Show was held on Saturday 14th, Fran was the only club member who went down to compete.

Tasha had a great time in the ring but missed out on a placing. Diva took it all a little more seriously and managed to get a very worthy 3rd place in Beginners. Competition is always fierce in these well filled classes and any place is well earned. Just 3/4 of a point separated 1st and 3rd place so it was a very close thing!

Well done Fran and fingers crossed for 1st next time.

Tayside, Lochee & District Canine Club Open Show

The venue for this show is Carnoustie Leisure Centre, situated right beside the beach, and with the sun shining all day long on Saturday (14th), you couldn't have asked for a better setting for a show. We won't think about previous shows where it rained and a howling gale was coming off the sea!

Four rings were held outside, quite some distance from the two held inside the hall, which meant for a bit of a split. It wasn't easy to keep track of what went on but I have some results, let me know of any I've missed. Sorry, no photos.

Linda and Ron's Esmee was Best AVNSC toy, Freda was BOB and Best Hound Special Minor Puppy.

Elizabeth's Belle beat all her kennel mates to take BOB.

Sue's Desmond won his Graduate class and Jana won her Post Grad class.

Falkirk Open Show

The Central Hall, Ingliston was the venue for Falkirk & District Canine Club's open show on August 7th. It's a large hall with plenty of space but quite noisy and with the added attraction of dried cow dung dotted around the rings! Plenty of classes were scheduled and the groups were all of a good size.

Sue's Desmond won his class, BOB and then G4. Elwood won the AV toy minor puppy class and Puppy Group 3.

I don't think any other club members were down there but let me know if I'm wrong.

Turriff, Clatt and Keith Companion Shows

Clatt companion show was held on the same day as Highland open show but didn't do so well with the weather as it poured down there! Lesley's Rommi took the rain in her stride and went BIS.

A companion show was held Monday, the second day of Turriff show. Erica and Doug's Twiglet did very well when she took RBIS.

Keith companion show was held in lovely sunshine and there was a great turn out for it. Morag's Gigha won the utility class, Sue's Pansy the toy class, Lesley's Merry the terrier class. Erica and Doug's Twiglet won the junior class and Charlotte won the hound class and BIS. Heather's Skye won the gundog class and RBIS.

Turriff Open Show

After a dry, and at times sunny, Highland show, it was all change the following day at Turriff with rain predominating later in the day. Some judging took place under cover but much of it took place outside with some of the toy and utility groups getting quite a soaking!'

It was difficult to keep track of all that was going on so please let me know of your wins if I've misssed any.

Hound - Erica and Doug's Charlotte won her class but was beaten to BOB by Twiglet who went on to take Group 3. Linda and Ron's Freda won her class and BOB.

Terrier - Caitlin's Solo was BOB and G2.

Utility - Logie was Best Import Register.

Working - Donna's River won his class and I think Joanne's Walter won his with River taking BOB. John's Harvey won his class and Best AVNSC.

Gundog - Sue's Kupah was 1st in his class and BOB.

Pastoral - Jenny's Sadie took BOB and G3. Katrina's Marty was 1st in his class as was Leo who went on to take BOB and G4.

Toy - Ria's Jasper was 1st in his class. Jill's Tiger won his class and G2 (?). Elizabeth's Malibu took Best AVNSC, not too sure if she took a group placing. Sue's Rosa, Desmond and Pansy each won their classes with Pansy taking BOB then winning the toy group for the second day running and topping it off with Best Opposite Sex in Show. Elwood took Puppy Group 2.

Highland CA Open Show

Highland CA held their annual summer show at Dingwall Mart on Saturday 31st July. The rain threatened a few times but never really came to anything, which was a good thing seeing as the gundog, working and pastoral rings were all outdoors.

It was a good day for Spey Valley with lots of wins for members, including the top spot, which was won by June's Benson. I think this must be his 10th Best In Show!

Linda and Ron's Hugo was also up there at the top, he took Reserve Best Puppy In Show!

Terrier - Jock and daughter Ann's Rosie (I think) took BOB and G1, puppy Zac was Best terrier pup. Cathy's Sula was Best NSC and G2. Karen's Ceilidh was BOB, took G4 and Best terrier veteran.

Gundog - Heather's Skye was Best NSC and also took the group. Sue's Jana won her class then BOB and G3. Katie's Chewie was BOB. Sue's Kendal and Logan both won their classes and BOB.

Utility - Linda and Ron's Denzil won his class, BOB and G2, Hugo Best Utility puppy and RBPIS. Morag's Logie was Best Import.

Toy - Sue's Elwood, Rosa and Pansy each won their respective classes, Pansy took BOB and G1. Elwood was Best toy puppy and Gypsy was Best toy veteran. Jill's Tiger was BOB and G2. Ria's Jasper won his class, BOB and G3. Linda's Esmee was Best NSC and G4.

Leeds Championship show 2010

Leeds Championship show was held at Harewood House, 23rd-24th July. The weather forecast hadn't been very promising but all three days turned out to be fine and dry.

June's Benson continued his run of success by taking the DCC, Best of Breed and being short-listed in the group.

Elaine was also present in the working group ring as Zeta took the BCC and Best of Breed. The Kumormai kennels had a very successful day with Zeta's litter sister (Manipulation) taking the RBCC.

Sue's Elwood was 2nd in his Minor Puppy class, a position repeated at the Northern and Eastern Papillon Club's open show at Thorpe Willoughby the following day.

Katie's Lara was 4th in a large Post Grad class.

New Deer Companion Show

Last Sunday a Companion Show was held at New Deer. It seems to have been an unusual setting - alongside the bar, as can be seen in the photos below!

Club members took the two top spots, John's Harvey winning BIS and Erica and Doug's Twiglet taking RBIS. Fran's Diesel also did well when he won a large gundog class.

Lochaber & District CC Open Obedience Show

Lochaber & District CC held their annual two day Open Obedience show at Spean Bridge, near Fort William, last weekend (17/18th). It's a very scenic setting but the weather was very unsettled - waterproofs definitely required!

Lisa, Colin and Fran all competed in the Beginners class but Lisa was the only one to do both days. Max was placed 4th on Saturday and 5th on Sunday.

Fran had two dogs in the same class on Sunday and Tash came out on top, she took 3rd and Diva was 8th.

Colin's Beauly also did well with his 6th place on Sunday.

National Working & Pastoral Breeds and a new Champion!

Malvern was the setting for last weekend's National Working & Pastoral Breeds Champ show and a few of our members attended the show.

It was a day to remember for June as Benson was awarded his 3rd CC, thus making him a Champion, and on top of that he took BOB and another G2!

Elaine also had a great day, Milo won his Puppy Dog class plus Best Puppy and Zeta took another CC. The winners of Post Grad and Limit Bitch were also Kumormai breeding and I think it was Zeta's litter sister who took the RBCC.

It was also well worth the long journey down for Carol, she had a win in Junior Dog, Limit Bitch (sorry, don't have names) plus the RBCC, and Chaos won her Puppy Bitch class and also Best Puppy.

Big congratulations to you all!

Caithness Canine Club Open Show

It's a very long way up to Wick but the friendly atmosphere at this show and lovely home baking made the journey worthwhile. The weather was beautiful on Saturday 10th which made for a very scenic drive. There weren't very many club members at the show but I do have a few results of note.

Niamh's Mia was Best Hound Puppy.

Caitlin's Solo was BOB and G1. Caitlin was also Best JH.

Linda's Esmee was Best Toy NSC and G4.

Joanne's Manfred won the Junior Stakes class.

I don't think many of us northerners made the journey all the way down to Peterborough for East of England last weekend. Intrepid Katie was one who did and Lara won her Graduate Bitch class and took 2nd in Yearling Bitch.

Cheshire County Open Show

While June and Katrina were away having a good time camping at the champ shows down south they also took in Cheshire County Open Show. Unusually for an open show, it is held over two days and must be very popular because it had classes almost as big as many of the champ shows!

Newfies had six classes and an entry of 43! Benson won his class, took BOB and then G2.

I'm sure the collie classes would have been well filled too, Marty won one of his classes and was 2nd in the other, Leo was 2nd in his.

Well done!

Aberdeen Canine Training Society Open Obedience Shows

ACTS held their weekend of obedience shows on July 3rd and 4th at Hazlehead Park. Saturday saw fine weather, if a little windy, but the rain fell on Sunday and it was wellies and waterproofs all round.

Lisa and Max had good Beginners rounds on both days, being placed 4th on Saturday and 10th on Sunday.

Fran was stewarding on Saturday, and Diva was busy at Bon Accord being a showdog, but they had a great result in Sunday's Beginners where they took 2nd place. Fran also worked Tash in the same class and was placed 6th.

Congratulations Lisa and Fran! Commiserations to Colin and Beauly who had some bad luck in the stay ring involving a dog which was more interested in the other dogs than staying where it was supposed to be. Better luck next time Colin...just make sure you're the opposite end of the ring to that dog!

Bon Accord Kennel Association Open Show

Seaton Park, Aberdeen was the venue for BAKA's second open show of the year on Saturday, 3rd July. As this is an outdoor show with no wet weather accommodation, everyone was hoping for a dry day and thankfully this was what we got. It was a bit on the breezy side but there was plenty of sunshine too.

Lots of wins to report, let me know of any I've missed and feel free to send any photos you may have.

Terrier - Caitlin had a great day with Solo, he was BOB then won the group and, at his last show as a puppy, he also won the Puppy Group. Daveena's Inka took Best AVNSC.

Working - I think Donna's River won his class but was beaten to BOB by Joanne's Manfred who went on to G2. Elaine's Zeta may have taken top honours last week but she had to make way for young Milo who took BOB. June's Benson was also BOB as was Richard's dobe (sorry,not sure of his name).

Pastoral - Linda's Gino won his class, BOB and Group 4. Fran's Diva took Best AVNSC.

Gundog - Lesley's Rommie was Best AVNSC and G2.

Utility - Morag's Logie won the Import Register class.

Hound - Joan's Bo was 1st in his class and BOB. Erica and Doug's Twiglet won her Post Grad class and PG2. Erica also handled Suzanne and Alan's Brodie and he won the AV Hound Minor Puppy class.

Toy - Jill's Tiger won the AVNSC class. Elizabeth and George's Lola was BOB. Sue's Rosa won her class and Elwood was 1st in the Toy Minor Puppy class. Lynne's Murphy was BOB.

Junior Handling - Ria won the 6-11 year class and went on to win overall Best Junior Handler.

There was a good turn out for our club match on June 29th and it was a nice way to end this session of classes.

Thanks to Pearl Crawford for coming along and judging the main match for us. Her Best In Match was Erica and Doug's Charlotte and Reserve Best In Match Fran's Diva. Best Veteran was June's Barney.

Morag judged 'Best of the rest' and chose Fran's Diesel. Niamh judged the Junior Handlers and Glenn was the winner there.

Three Counties Champ Show

Katrina is the only club member that I know of who went to Three Counties. It was worth the long trip down to Malvern as Leo came 2nd in a very large Limit Dog class and this gives him his Stud Book Number. Marty also did well to be placed 5th in a pretty big Junior Dog class.

Blackpool show was held from 25th-27th June and it turned out to be a scorcher for all three days.

Elaine had reason to celebrate when Zeta won her Limit Bitch class and then took the bitch CC, her third, which now makes her a Champion. Congratulations Elaine and Zeta!

June's Benson came very close to becoming a Champion, he won his Limit Dog class but had to settle for the RCC this time.

Katrina's Marty won his Junior Dog class and was 2nd in Yearling Dog, Leo was 2nd in Mid Limit Dog.

Katie's Lara was 3rd in Grad Bitch and Leia won her Limit Bitch class.

Sue's Kupah was 1st in his Junior Dog classs.

Border Union Champ Show

Border Union Champ Show was held at Kelso on June 19th and 20th and the two days couldn't have been more different as far as the weather was concerned. Although it stayed dry on Saturday, there was an extremely cold wind blowing which meant all but the very hardy were wrapped up in fleeces and coats! The trade stands were selling fleeces like hot cakes! Sunday still had a bit of a wind blowing but it was altogether much hotter and more like how a summer show should be.

Quite a number of club members attended with a good success rate. The best result has to be June's Benson winning his Limit Dog class, taking the dog CC (his 2nd), BOB and topping it off with Group 2! Congratulations June, we'll keep everything crossed for that 3rd.

Getting a group placing at a champ show is a major achievement, we wondered how many other club members may have done it in the past. I do know that Elaine had a G4 at Welsh Kennel Club with one of her mastiffs (remind me of the details Elaine). If you know of anyone else who may have reached such dizzy heights then let me know.

Other results:

Utility - Morag's Gigha was 2nd in her JB class, Logie went a bit further with his win in PGD and then taking Best Import Register. Linda and Ron's boys have both qualified for Crufts with Hugo's 3rd in MPD and Denzil's 3rd in PGD.

Pastoral - Katrina's Marty was 3rd in JD and 4th in YD.

Gundog - Ria handled Sue's Jana and she won her PGB class. Sue's Kupah was 2nd in PD and Jennifer's Wallace just missed qualifying with his 4th in PGD.

Terrier - Karen's Poppy was 2nd in AVNSC PGB. Glenn was handling her and this is the first time he has handled a dog to a qualifying position.

Toy - Sue's Elwood won his MPD class and was also Best Puppy Dog, Desmond qualified with his 2nd in a good sized PGD class. Jill's Tiger was 1st in his JD class and Suki (I think) was 3rd in PGB.

Whippet Club of Scotland Champ Show

Niamh, John, Liz and Heather were all at the Whippet Club of Scotland's recent championship show and there were good results for all.

Niamh's Mia was 4th in Puppy Bitch and Keano 5th in Open Dog. Keano's brother Jake, belonging to Niamh's dad John, gained his stud book number when he was placed 3rd in Limit Dog. Both brothers now have their stud book numbers - quite an achievement when whippets have such large classes.

Liz's Maisie was 5th in Minor Puppy Bitch and Poppy was 3rd in Limit Bitch.

Heather's Mica (hope that's spelt right Heather!) won the veteran class and Best Veteran In Show!

Last week we held our end of term test night. It was very successful with only a few not making the grade - keep practising...you'll get there in December!

Jasper Pug is quite capable of passing all the Gold elements but decided on the night to give everyone a laugh by acting the clown! Next time Ria.

The Scottish Beagle Club held their Champ show at Lanark on the 19th June (I think).

I'm not sure if Erica and Doug's Willow had already qualified but she certainly did at this show with a 3rd in Limit Bitch. Suzanne and Alan's Brodie (Charlotte's pup) just missed out with his 4th in Puppy Dog.

Dundee Canine Club

Camperdown Country Park, Dundee is where Dundee CC hold their annual Open show. It's a lovely setting, with many lovely mature trees dotted about, as you can see from the above photo. Conditions were ideal on June 12th with frequent sunny spells - enough to make for a few red faces the next day! Ground conditions were not quite so ideal due to the number of rabbit droppings that were scattered over all the rings! Not so easy keeping dog's heads up with such tempting scents about - especially for those breeds closer to the ground!

June's Benson was on top form again, he took Best Of Breed, then the group and finished it off with yet another Best In Show! Congratulations!

The show is big and there was a lot happening at once so I'm not too sure about how everyone did. Please let me know if you did well.

Toy - Jill's Tiger and Chico were both 1st in their respective classes and Tiger took BOB. Ria's Jasper also won his class, BOB and then G4. Elizabeth and George's Lola was BOB. Sue's Elwood was 2nd in a large breed Puppy class but went one better by winning the AV Minor Puppy Stakes class plus £10 to boot! (It all helps towards those fuel costs!)

Pastoral - Morag handled Jenny's Sadie to win her class, BOB and then to win a very large group! Katrina's Leo won his Limit class and then BOB.

Terrier - Daveena's Inka was Best AVNSC and Caitlin's Solo was BOB and 2nd in Puppy.

Lossiemouth Community Centre was the venue for BMNCC's first open show of the year on May 29th. There was plenty of success for club members at what could be called our 'local' show - so nice not to be travelling miles for a change!

We had three representatives in the Best In Show line up and three in for Best Puppy In Show. Daveena's Inka stormed her way to RBIS and Sue's Elwood took RBPIS - congratulations!

Terrier - As already mentioned, Daveena's Inka took RBIS after winning her NSC class and the terrier group. Caitlin's Solo was BOB and Best Terrier Puppy.

Working - June's Benson took BOB and G1. Elaine's Zeta won the NSC class and G3.

Pastoral - Katrina's Leo won his class, BOB and G3. Jenny's Sadie was BOB as was Roseanne's Toby.

Hound - Bob's Luka was BOB. Niamh's Mia was up against Erica and Doug's Twiglet for Best Hound Puppy with Twiglet coming out on top.

Ingliston had warm sunshine for all three days of the Scottish Kennel Club's Champ show on 21st, 22nd and 23rd May, great conditions for those who were camping! Lots of wins and places to report, let me know if I've missed anyone out.

Utility - Morag's Logie is the only one I know of in this group, he won his class and then took Best Dog and Best Import Register. He also got to do a lap of honour in the group ring seeing as he was unable to compete.

Hound - No wins but a couple of qualifying positions. Erica and Doug's Charlotte was 2nd in Post Grad Bitch, Joan's Bo was 3rd in Post Grad Dog and Niamh's Mia just missed qualifying with 4th in a good sized Puppy Bitch class.

Junior Handling - Caitlin won the JHA 12-16 yr class with Solo and Ria was 3rd in the YKC Handling 6-11 yr.

Obedience - Jenny, Colin and Lisa all competed in very warm conditions, Jenny and Brint were the only ones to be placed with a 3rd in Beginners.

Sue had a successful trip down to the Papillon Club of Scotland's Champ show at Lanark on May 22nd, three of her four dogs won their classes - Desmond was the only one to miss out but he did have a class of almost 16 and he found it a bit of a bore!

Elwood was at his first proper show and he won the Minor Puppy Dog class, Rosa was 1st in Post Grad Bitch and her mother Gypsy won the Veteran Bitch class.

Good Citizen test night and a match

Last night was the last training night before the summer break, normal classes will resume on August 10th.

Our session hasn't quite finished yet though, there are two more weeks to look forward to.

Next Tuesday will be the Good Citizen test night, 7pm start for Bronze and Silver and around 8.30pm for Gold. If you arrive early for the Gold, you are welcome to come in but please leave your dog in the car until the test is due to start.

Finally, on Tuesday 29th June, we will end with a match (show not obedience) for club members. It starts at 7pm and our judge will be Pearl Crawford (Louiston).

Caitlin had a busy time at the recent West Highland White Terrier Club Open Show in Polmont. Solo was 2nd in his puppy class, 1st in Junior and 1st in Special Beginners and Caitlin also handled the eventual Reserve Best In Show winner.

PDSA Companion Show

We couldn't have asked for better weather for our show at Roseisle on Sunday, the sun shone all day and a good crowd gathered to make the most of it.

Thanks to our judges, Jacquie Fraser, Jenny Taylor and Margaret Gray, to the stewards, to the hard working ladies in the kitchen, to all the committee and helpers, to all who donated raffles, food and money, and to everyone who turned up on the day. We couldn't have done it without you all!

It was a very successful day and we should have a profit of about £500 to send to the PDSA.Club members took many of the top places. Daveena's Inka, handled by Glenn, won the terrier class, Roseanne's Toby won the pastoral class, Joanne's Manfred took the junior class, Lesleys' Rommie was 1st in a large gundog class, Ria's Jasper won the toy class and Ailsa's Mookie won the utility class and then Best In Show. Caitlin took Best Junior Handler and also won the Triers obedience class with Solo. Margaret's Ellie won the Highers obedience class.

With three rings operating, there was a lot going on at the same time so not all classes could be photographed. Thanks to Nicky for sending me quite a few of the following photos.

Linda Offen has sent in this interesting article on just how difficult it is to make up a French Champion. And we thought we had it hard!

"As I seem to have "been in dogs" for at least a century, you will appreciate that I have got to know a lot of people in a variety of breeds over the years. One of them is a lovely lady by the name of Avril Lacey. When I first met her in the late 1970s she was well known for her "Weetoneon" Afghan Hounds but then became just as famous for her Hungarian Pulis, which breed she is synonymous with today. She still has one Afghan and, in fact, judged that breed as well as Pulis at WELKS this year. She has also judged both breeds at Crufts. Along the way she also owned Komondors, which always seemed to take over the whole of the hall when she brought them to training classes!
A few years ago Avril and her partner Stan decided to decamp to France (sensible couple!) together with all the dogs. She still travels to the UK to attend Championship shows but, as expected, has also managed to make up some of her stock to French Champions. This process, I have discovered, is very different from what now appears to be an almost relaxed approach in the UK to making up a Champion. The process was explained recently by Avril in the canine press where she writes the Puli breed notes, and I have reproduced it here to give an insight into what dogs and owners have to go through following gaining the necessary show wins.

I have also included a photo of Avril in the pastoral group ring at Crufts 2010 with her latest Champion Puli who, I hope you will agree, is a worthy title holder.

FRENCH CHAMPION WEETONEON ARTIC STORM

Gaining a French Ch title is different to the UK. You have to apply to the French KC to claim the title and it takes quite some time to be confirmed, as there are several items to check. You have to submit the CACs that have been won at both National and International Shows, plus one won at a Speciality National Show, and also one won either at The Club National Show (CBEI) or at the Championnatt de France. You also have to provide hip score certification (top scores only), eye tests (pass) and the TAN test certificate (temperament test). This test is held the day before the Club's annual Championship Show, where over 350 dogs from Groups 1 and 2 take this test. This test is mandatory, as are the other previously mentioned items, to become a Champion. The TAN test now includes a Gun Test (previously Group 2 only). The TAN test is for correct social behaviour with individuals, in crowds, and with other dogs, reactions in unusual situations, trust and obeying the handler, e.g. in one part, handler and dog have to jump over a series of tapes placed across side to side (approximately 12" high) between an avenue of barriers approximately 4' wide apart and for a length of about 6 metres. If a dog tries to crawl under, it is failed. It is a long day but worthwhile, and interesting to see all the various breeds and their reactions. The breeds one thinks would be the boldest sadly sometimes fail.

The National Championship show was held from Thursday to Sunday last week and for the few club members who made the trip down to Stafford. it was worth the effort.

Elaine's Zeta took one step nearer to becoming a champion when she won her class and then took the CC. Congratulations and good luck for the third!

As usual, whippet classes were very large so Liz must have been thrilled to bits when Poppy won her Post Grad class and sister Bunty took 3rd in Limit.

Katie's Lara is now out of Junior and competing with the 'big girls' but being on the young side didn't affect her consistant record at champ shows as she was placed 3rd in Graduate.

Sue's Kupah is another who has been consistantly in the cards at champ shows, he took 2nd in his Junior class.

Don't forget our companion show at Rosiesle this coming Sunday. All proceeds will be going to PDSA so come along and support a good cause.

There will be pedigree, novelty and obedience classes, something to suit everyone. Refreshments will be available in the hall and a raffle will be held. Any donations for the raffle would be very welcome.

Dogs do not need to be Kennel Club registered but must be 6 months of age or over. Entries will be taken from 11am with judging starting at 12 noon.
